Djurdjevic's first X-MEN FIRST CLASS was the obligatory character-establishing team shot that editors request so they can reuse it as the cover for the inevitable trade paperback compilation. Freed from this restriction Djurdjevic's second X-MEN FIRST CLASS cover didn't need to depict the entire team. For the encounter with classic Ditko villain, the Lizard, Djurdjevic selects only two team members. Having the Lizard dominate the upper half of the composition increases the illusion of the two heroes being outnumbered by a lizard in a lab coat.
The character easily lends itself to myriad idiosyncratic artistic interpretations that remain faithful to Living Legend Ditko's archetypical design.
16 comics were released by Marvel that day. Djurdjevic was the only artist to provide two covers. Additionally, he was the only artist to have covers on four of the 80 Marvel books that shipped from September 20 to October 18 of 2006. There was a 15-way tie for Second Most Prolific Marvel Cover Artist during that five week period between MARK BAGLEY, TIM BRADSTREET, JO CHEN, SEAN CHEN, GABRIELE DELL'OTTO, JUAN DOE, PASQUAL FERRY, RON FRENZ, PHIL HESTER,
GREG HORN, MIKE PERKINS, RYAN SOOK, MARK TEXEIRA, MICHAEL TURNER and JOHN WATSON at 2 covers each.
